This is a beautiful example of a traditional Hijiori-style Kokeshi doll. The Hijiori style originated in the remote hot-spring mountain village of Hijiori Olsen in Yamagata Prefecture of Japan. It is one of the 11 traditional schools of kokeshi making recognised in the Tōhoku region.
This doll perfectly illustrates the classic hallmarks of this specific linage- a prominent, rounded head with a distinctive black painted hairstyle that frames the face and the stark, slightly dramatic/ piercing eyes with clearly defined eyebrows.
This doll is in good vintage condition with wear to the turned timber and faded hand-paint consistent with age.
Sourced in Melbourne. Signature to the back, identifying the specific master artisan who hand-turned and painted this piece. /
Dimensions: H 23cm
