Vintage hand-painted Japanese Kokeshi Doll #1

$85.00

This authentic vintage Japanese kokeshi doll is believed to have been turned and hand-painted in the historic Akiu Onsen region of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. As the Tohoku area is the birthplace of kokeshi, this is an exceptional find for serious collectors and lovers of Japanese folk art.

Hand-signed by Akira Yamao (born 1927), a respected craftsman who learned woodturning from his father, Takeji Yamato, the doll features the classic deep-green bands near the base—a signature element of traditional Akiu-style kokeshi. The solid timber has beautifully aged, with natural wood grain visible between the hand-painted details.

Overall the piece is in good vintage condition, showing patina and some fading to the paint consistent with its age.
