A striking piece of mid-century art glass, this vintage ashtray features a bold sunshine- yellow bowl encased over a milky white (opaline) base, created using the ‘‘sommerso’’ ( submerged) glass technique popular in Murano and Scandinavian glasswork of the 1950s-60s. The organic, free-form silhouette, irregular and pebble-like rather than perfectly round, is typical of hand-blown studio glass from this era, with a gently undulating rim and three soft indents designed to rest a cigarette.
The glass has a thick, substantial wall with excellent clarity and saturation in the yellow layer, catching the light beautifully.
